Applied Program: Educational Testing Evaluation and measurement / Educational statistics and research

Economic conditions of any given society governs all walks of life of that society, with no exception of education. The level of social and economic development determines the level of educational development, specifically the soundness of educational policies, the amount of financial input into education, and the level of national literacy. The successful experiences of developed countries indicate that national literacy and the level of education in turn produce both a positive and a far-reaching impact on the social and economic development of those countries.
With the rapid social and economic improvement of China over the past two decades, education has given an unprecedented priority. Educators are increasingly concerned with such central issues as curriculum design, teaching methodology, pedagogical improvement, testing evaluation and perfection of the testing criteria, vocational and technical training, as well as the application of educational psychology. Under such circumstances, as an instructor working on the forefront of education, I have been contemplating on a number of questions—how individuals, who are the subjects of the social and economic development, can receive better education? how to facilitate their balanced intellectual and psychological development through education? how the younger generation can be directed to make contributions to society as future responsible citizens? and what can I do for the cause of education which I am so deeply enamored of?
The most direct factor that has motivated my present application is a unique experience of mine over the past one year—since July 2003, I have been involved in a joint educational program between xx Electric Vocational and Technical College (where I work at the Department of Economics and Management) and xx Technical and Further Education Institution, Australia. This program is part of a national educational reform campaign designed to introduce advanced teaching concepts and practices to enhance China’s domestic education. some of the special features of this program are: a complete Australian educational pattern, courses taught by both Chinese and Australian teachers, with textbooks and tests in English. As one of the teachers of Foreign Accounting, I have also assumed the role of team leader on the subject. I exercised my leadership through effective management and coordinated with our Australian counterparts through constructive communications. Most importantly, my good command of English has played an important role. My achievements has brought me the honor as the first outstanding teachers of China’s electrical colleges.
This joint education program has given me important topics to reflect on. A comparative study of Chinese and Australian teaching styles shows that the two countries have considerable differences in terms of educational concepts, educational system and testing and evaluating standards. Our Australian colleagues attach great importance to developing students ability to analyze and solve problems independently through a scientifically-designed syllabus, and a set of textbooks targeted at specific and practical problems. I have been further impressed by their idea of lifelong education which, through a flexible system of education and training, technical education, further education, degree-oriented education and vocational training complement each other for form a unified national educational qualifications framework geared to the needs of diverse professions.
The advantages of such an educational system, with its rigorous testing, evaluation and measurement during different stages of an individual’s education, are obvious. It is much more scientific, more conducive to students’ development of well-rounded qualifications. Drawing important inspirations from it, I have applied some useful experiences to my own teaching practices and have actually completed an article xx, which has been accepted for publication by xx.
In applying for your program, I believe there are a number of unique strengths to my credit—my own educational backgrounds in Industry Enterprise Management Engineering as a junior college student at the Department of Business Administration, xx University, and an interdisciplinary program in Marxist Economic Theory and Moral Education at the Department of Economics, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, xx University. Testing, evaluation and measurement, as well as educational statistics, all require high level of mathematic aptitudes and my academic transcript can indicate my sound performance in Higher Mathematics, Linear Algebra, Probability and Statistics. They have given me a useful tool of analysis and the strong ability in logical thinking. My junior college education in enterprise management engineering allowed me to have an overall view of organization behavior and to develop excellent decision-making strategies. During my Master’s program, I focused on market—oriented economy research and my research ability was most remarkably improved through in-depth investigation of some of the most important issues in China’s present-day economic development. My publication of two research papers xx and xx in two leading scholarly journals is an unmistakable indication of my strong research capacity and future potential.
My 2-year professional experience as a teacher will also be an important advantage. Apart from teaching Political Economics and Accounting Basics at xx University, I have been teaching Business Mathematics and Statistics, Financial and Business Performance Information, Budgeting, Business Performance Evaluation, and Financial Risk Evaluation at my present college. I can skillfully apply both quantitative and qualitative methods and highly visualized tables and graphs to perform data analysis and overall evaluation, providing plans, improving specific measures, and presenting final reports. Finally, I have received intensive vocational training in which I learned Higher Education as a Science, Psychology in Higher Education, Theory and Methodology of Higher Education, etc. This training has given me valuable theoretical guidance to my teaching practices.
Educational testing, evaluation and measurement, education statistics and research, educational psychology, human resource development, vocational education, curriculum and guidance, those are seven areas I am interested in. Knowledge from those subjects will be highly useful in improve the quality of our teaching and developing the potential of the students. With my accumulated teaching experience and a strong motivation to be a well-trained educator, I deem an advanced degree program absolutely necessary for me at this stage of my professional development. My careful research shows that the program offered by xx School of Education of the University of xx is precisely geared to my intellectual needs. Your program appeals to me with its combination of coursework and hands-on training in the form of internships, partnerships with faculty, partnerships with school-districts and research institutes. I can participate in on- going measurement and evaluation research studies to accumulate experience in active research and policy efforts.
My short-term experience is to complete my Ph.D. program, focusing on a specific pedagogical issue in China by applying the taught methods in your program. With the academic excellence developed from your university, I will pursue my long-term goal of becoming an education administrator or research at a major Chinese university or research institute. I will introduce my acquired knowledge and expertise into Chinese educational context comparatively and creatively to make my own contributions to the country’s educational enterprise as a whole.
